This module includes the recommended steps nurses can take if a patient expresses concern and/or is concerned about a suspicious skin lesion or if the nurse/health practitioner notices a suspicious lesion. A nurse working group provided feedback on the module.
The module takes about 45 minutes to complete and comprises:
- Information on the current burden of skin cancer in New Zealand
- Understanding UV radiation
- Best practice steps for sun protection (slip, slop, slap and wrap)
- Ensuring sufficient vitamin D
- Early detection of skin cancer – includes what nurses need to do regarding assessment, referral, documentation and follow-up
- Types of skin cancer.
The Nursing Council advises that the slide show can be counted as professional development hours. Nurses are welcome to provide email feedback on the module to Barb Hegan of the HPA.
