Melanoma in New Zealand: New registrations and deaths 2013

2013 Melanoma Data
Published on 9 November 2016, the latest release in the Cancer: New registrations and deaths series presents information about melanoma deaths as well as new cases of melanoma diagnosed and reported to the New Zealand Cancer Registry. In 2013:
- Melanoma was the fourth most common cancer among both men and women (2366 registrations).
- Melanoma was the third most common cancer among men (1226 registrations).
- Melanoma was the third most common cancer among women (1140 registrations).
- In people aged 25-44 years melanoma was the most common cancer among men and the second most common cancer among women.
- Among men melanoma was the fourth most common cause of cancer death (232 deaths; rate of 6.9 per 100,000).
- Among women there were 124 deaths from melanoma (rate of 3.1 per 100,000).
- Among Māori there was a total of 9 deaths from melanoma (5 among men and 4 among women, with rates of 1.9 and 1.3 per 100,000 respectively).
- The registration rate for males residing in the least deprived areas was 1.6 times the rate for males residing in the most deprived areas.
- The registration rate for females residing in the least deprived areas was 1.9 times the rate for females residing in the most deprived areas.
- All in situ melanomas have been excluded from the data presented.
- There was a total of 133 deaths from non-melanoma skin cancers, with 88 deaths among men and 45 deaths among women (rates of 2.4 and 0.8 per 100,000 respectively).
