Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) rates, incl. multiple cSCCs per patient, increasing

4 November 2020

According to this recent nationwide epidemiologic cohort study in the Netherlands, incidence rates of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) keep increasing, especially among female patients, and the occurrence of multiple cSCCs per patient significantly adds to the current and future burden on dermatologic health care. Revision of skin cancer policies are needed to halt this increasing trend.

Routine imaging should be considered for detection of asymptomatic relapse for select, high‐risk patients with Stage II melanoma

2 November 2020

This study aims to define recurrence patterns for Stage II melanoma to inform future surveillance guidelines. It concludes that routine imaging surveillance played a larger role in detecting recurrent disease for select groups in this cohort than noted in prior studies. In an era of effective systemic therapy, routine imaging should be considered for detection of asymptomatic relapse for select, high‐risk patient groups.

Minimizing the dermatoscopic morphologic overlap between basal and squamous cell carcinoma

29 October 2020

The purpose of this retrospective study was to minimize the morphologic overlap between BCC and SCC. It concludes that clinically misclassified BCCs and SCCs are usually non‐pigmented ulcerated tumours. Erosions and keratin masses/scales are more robust criteria as compared to vascular structures for the differential diagnosis between BCC and SCC.
