4 November 2020According to this recent nationwide epidemiologic cohort study in the Netherlands, incidence rates of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) keep increasing, especially among female patients, and the occurrence of multiple cSCCs per patient significantly adds to the current and future burden on dermatologic health care. Revision of skin cancer policies are needed to halt this increasing trend.
4 November 2020Despite cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) being the second most common skin cancer, our knowledge of the epidemiologic characteristics of cSCC is suboptimal. In many countries, such as the US, cSCC is not included in cancer registries, which has long been recognized as a barrier to understanding this malignant neoplasm.
4 November 2020This recent study supports the use of circulating tumor DNA as prognosis biomarker, suggesting that patients with detectable levels have an unfavorable outcome.
4 November 2020According to this recent study, repurposing the FDA-approved leukemia drug, nilotinib, may be effective for prolonging survival for patients harboring BRAF-mutant melanomas.
2 November 2020This study aims to define recurrence patterns for Stage II melanoma to inform future surveillance guidelines. It concludes that routine imaging surveillance played a larger role in detecting recurrent disease for select groups in this cohort than noted in prior studies. In an era of effective systemic therapy, routine imaging should be considered for detection of asymptomatic relapse for select, high‐risk patient groups.
2 November 2020This recent study concludes that in the setting of systemic anticancer therapies, survival in melanoma brain metastases is significantly improved after surgery or stereotactic radiosurgery, even in patients with advanced and uncontrolled systemic disease at the time of presentation, supporting an aggressive approach to melanoma brain metastases management.
29 October 2020The purpose of this retrospective study was to minimize the morphologic overlap between BCC and SCC. It concludes that clinically misclassified BCCs and SCCs are usually non‐pigmented ulcerated tumours. Erosions and keratin masses/scales are more robust criteria as compared to vascular structures for the differential diagnosis between BCC and SCC.
29 October 2020Data of this recent study help guide initial Mohs micrographic surgery and wide local excision margins required for tumor clearance according to tumor features. Nodular BCCs less than 6 mm may be cleared with 3-mm margins instead of the current 4-mm margin recommendation.
29 October 2020The findings of this recent study suggest that multiple aggregated yellow-white (MAY) globules may have utility as a new BCC dermoscopic criterion with a high specificity. MAY globules were negatively associated with superficial BCC and positively associated with deeper-seated, histologic, higher-grade tumor subtypes.
28 October 2020This recent article provides an opinion on the application of adjuvant therapy for melanoma in clinical practice.
