1 August 2020This recent review looks at the current clinical development status of human intratumoural immunotherapy (HIT-IT) in the management of unresectable and metastatic melanoma. Early data indicates a synergy between HIT-IT and immune checkpoint inhibitors, suggesting future clinical use will focus on the combined use of these agents.
1 August 2020According to this recent study, internet based learning is a promising approach to delivering clinical skin examination skills to primary care nurse practitioners.
1 August 2020According to this recent randomised control trial conducted in Arkansas, educational videos used in cosmetology schools increase student's ability to recognise potential skin cancers and talk with clients about sun safety and consulting a dermatologist about suspicious moles.
18 July 2020This recent study examined the clinical-pathological significance of Leptin receptor (LEPR) expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. It found LEPR expression to be a predictor of the malignant potential of squamous cell carcinoma. This provides the possibility of individualizing anti-tumor treatment using LEPR antagonists.
18 July 2020This recent study tested the effectiveness of UV detection stickers to improve sunscreen use in adolescents playing outdoor sports. It found a greater than 3-fold improvement in sunscreen use when the UV detection stickers were provided.
18 July 2020This systematic review examined the impact of biopsy technique on clinically important outcomes for cutaneous melanoma. Findings identified a small but statistically significant increase in all-cause mortality for punch biopsies used to diagnose cutaneous melanoma, giving further support to the current clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation of pigmented lesions suspected for the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma.
16 July 2020This multicentric collaborative study conduced by the International Dermoscopy Society analyses dermatoscopic features of thin (≤ 2mm Breslow thickness) versus thick (> 2mm Breslow thickness) nodular melanoma and predictors of nodular melanoma versus nodular non‐melanoma tumors. It concludes that dotted vessels, white shiny streaks and irregular blue structureless area were predictors for thinner nodular melanoma compared to non‐melanoma nodular tumors.
16 July 2020This recent study explored the utility of p16 and PRAME in differentiating nodal nevi from metastatic melanoma by immunohistochemistry, with findings suggesting PRAME is more accurate than p16.
14 July 2020This recent study investigated the impact of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) on recurrence and survival after melanoma surgery. It found the use of intraoperative NSAIDS did not prevent death or recurrence in patients with melanoma.
14 July 2020This recent study reports to have found that inhibition of the epigenetic modifier protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) enhances the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibition in multiple mouse models of melanoma, suggesting the combination’s potential for clinical translation.
