CXCL8, THBS1, KIT may be key genes in metastasis of melanoma

5 June 2020

The molecular mechanism leading to melanoma metastasis is currently unclear. According to this recent study, CXCL8, THBS1 and KIT may be the key genes in the metastasis of melanoma and thus may be regarded as therapeutic targets in the future.

Australian GPs supportive of sentinel lymph node biopsy, but familiarity with guidelines is low

4 June 2020

In Australia, the uptake of the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) appears low despite clinical practice guideline recommendations. The aim of this study was to describe the knowledge and attitudes of general practitioners (GPs) to SLNB. The study concludes that GPs were generally supportive of SLNB, however, familiarity with the guidelines was low, particularly regarding which patients should be considered for SLNB.

It concludes that three years after banning commercial solaria in Australia, regulation enforcement activities have decreased, and consumers have adopted substitute tanning methods.

Priority of risk, but not perceived magnitude of risk, predicts improved sun-protection behavior

24 May 2020

Understanding multiple components of risk perceptions is important because perceived risk predicts engagement in prevention behaviors. According to this recent study, priority of risk (i) seems to be a component of risk perceptions distinguishable from magnitude of risk and cancer worry, (ii) may be an important predictor of daily prevention behavior, and (iii) remained elevated 1 year following genetic counseling only for participants who received a positive melanoma genetic test result.

Biomarkers in melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer prevention and risk stratification

23 May 2020

Over the recent years there has been significant interest in development of biomarkers indicative of exposure to ultraviolet radiation exposure to improve early detection of cutaneous malignancies. This study discusses emerging biomarkers for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer that can help with risk stratification and targeted prevention and treatment.
